1587
Detail from a line drawing sketch map, showing defences of the Solent area.
Detail from John Speed's map of the Isle of Wight, produced in 1611. Many subsequent map-makers copied Speed's projections, continuing to show Brading Duver extending from the Bembridge side. From 1630, however, when the sea broke through Middleton's embankment at the east end, the outlet became fixed at that end, thus falsifying all later maps that continued on the Speed model. 1611
