Reg Chiverton

In the early 1950s I was a little boy living in Tennyson Road at Cowes.I have vivid memories of a regular caller to our house, a man known as “Farmer Chiverton.” With his horse and cart he came to our house and many others in the town to collect vegetable waste, or ‘pig swill.’ This went back to Fairfields Farm in Shiny Bricks Lane, just off the Niton road, to feed his pigs. Over the following years he became something of a family friend and we would even go and visit him at Fairfields from time to time. Many years later, I met Reg again when Colin Fairweather and I recorded an interview with him. It took place at his retirement cottage in Whitwell on 11th June 1986.
