Totland Bay

View of Totland Bay c. 1890. Due to the lack of sea defences, the cliff was far more vulnerable to erosion at its foot by the sea, consequently the cliffs collapsed regularly, leaving fresh sections uncovered.

Enlarged section of the cliff at north end of Totland Bay, showing uncovered bare cliff face.

April 2003. Totland Bay is now protected by sea defences that have allowed the cliffs behind to become stabilised. More scrub and trees have become established, covering large areas of the cliff face, although there are occasional small landslides.
